Graphic Design Instruction

As a former visual journalist and the co-owner of a graphic design firm, I can bring a lot of knowledge on various design mediums to the table. My expertise in data visualization and my 18 years of experience in graphic design have allowed me to have a diverse portfolio in static, web and motion content. I’ve taught two courses at the University of Miami’s School of Journalism and completed a teaching internship at the Savannah College of Art and Design’s Motion Design department between 2011 and 2016.

In the two courses I taught, CVJ-331 Infographics and CVJ-106 Multimedia Design, my goal was to develop or modify the curriculum to reflect modern and popular design themes I was experiencing through my firm. My thesis explored the evolution of infographics into motion graphics for newspapers and their websites. I use my experience through my company KarBel Multimedia to explore new design techniques and popular design concepts, and then incorporate that in my teachings so as to better prepare my students in an ever-evolving workforce. During my SCAD teaching internship, I learned a lot about student development. I believe in teaching a well-rounded curriculum that encourages the student to explore and challenge their creativity, and supports my basic philosophy that every great artist was once a beginner.

The following is a compilation of design work by my undergraduate students:

Movie Poster Design

Students were expected to choose a movie and visualize it’s core concept in a poster design.

Magazine Design

Students were expected to visualize the story’s concept, choosing or creating images that visualized and enhanced the story’s goals.

Infographic Design

Students were expected to research content, edit data, and visualize a story with minimal text with an emphasis on art and graphics.

Web & Interactive Design

Students are expected to understand the concept of responsive and interactive design, with an emphasis on user experience.
