09 Jan Exploring graffiti and street art in Miami’s Wynwood District
I’ve lived in South Florida since 2003, and I ventured into Wynwood for the first time last December looking for donuts. I’ve heard about Miami’s famed warehouse-turned-trendy-art district, which is just an artsy way of describing gentrification. You can see some murals (certainly not the best ones) from I-95 — which any local knows is possible during most times of the day as traffic is usually slow enough to take in the scenes.
But my first venture into Wynwood was during the annual Art Basel show in December. I had just finished attending an AIGA-Miami breakfast meet-up in South Beach, and figured it was a good time to drag my husband to Wynwood so I can buy some amazing donuts from Salty Donut. Donuts for me, and a brief art walk for him — a winning combination. We were not disappointed. So much so that we went back a few weeks later on New Year’s Eve with family to see more paintings and eat more fabulous donuts.
When I returned home after the New Year’s Eve walk, I started to do more research on some of the artists who’s work grace the walls of Wynwood Walls. I knew of one artist, Shepard Fairey (you know him as the artist responsible for the Obama Hope poster). And I’m pleased to have been introduced to several more fantastic artists, both local and internationally known. I’ll be back for sure. Below are a few of my favorites from our little art walk. Stay tuned for more artist profiles in the coming weeks.
FYI: Wynwood has a monthly art walk on the second Saturday night of every month.
