This is one of my all-time favorite illustrations, though it was never completed. It was originally meant to be a full-page infographic detailing the disastrous effects of deforestation in a mountainous island, like Haiti. It was my first big project at the Sun Sentinel, abruptly pulled after I showed the mockup to the editor who would take over the project.
The graphic file is mostly lost — it was originally a Freehand file that I never converted to Illustrator. But the illustration is still around, and I still remember how hard I worked on it. It’s all done in Photoshop, cobbled together from a bunch of photographs. I was still working out the mudslide, before I moved on to the second phase of adding a village at the base of the mountain too. I had posted an image of the original graphic mockup on a different news design blog that’s since been deleted.
